Coaches shoot

Friday, Mar. 12th, 2010 Posted by Steve Hooper

As discussed at the AGM Martlets have arranged a shoot exclusively for coaches to be held at Brinsbury campus. This will be a great networking opportunity and a chance to shoot without being called-upon to 'have a look' at someone halfway through the round...

Junior Barebow/Longbow workshop

Tuesday, Mar. 3rd, 2010 Posted by Steve Hooper

The Guild is holding a workshop that is free of charge to junior barebow/longbow archers from within Sussex and will be led by current British barebow champion, Steve Baldwin.

This is a great opportunity to learn from Steve's wealth of experience.

The workshop will be held at Brinsbury Campus just north of Pulborough on the A29 and will run from 10:00 to 14:00 on Saturday 20th March. All costs for the venue are borne by The Martlets Guild... You just need to register and turn-up (with your gear and parents, of course). If you have a coach that you work with they will also be welcome to attend.

Visit the Workshops page to find a booking form: Workshops

Compound workshop

Sunday, Dec. 20th, 2009 Posted by Steve Hooper

This weekend saw a Martlets run workshop on compound bow set up and shooting. The guest speaker was Liam Grimwood who braved the icy conditions to drive down from The Wirral to present his own thoughts and ideas on the subject.

Two separate sessions were held at Brinsbury Campus (one on each day) in which Liam gave original, interesting and considered talks before helping each archer in practical one-on-one issues, whether bow setup or technique.

I think everyone was particularly impressed when Liam picked-up one archer's bow that had not been shooting well through paper and proceded to make a perfect bullet-hole on the first arrow!

Despite his young age Liam has a wealth of experience and was happy and willing to share with anyone interested and feedback from the workshop was overwhelmingly positive with the general consensus being that, despite being caught-out by the snow, it was very enjoyable and informative.

A very special thank you goes to our CCO, Les Bartlett, for the work and passion he put in to originating the idea and making it a success!

Level 2 update
Introduction

It is the intention that the updating of Coaches holding the old “Coach” grade to
the new “Level 2 Coach” grade should be as simple, painless and inexpensive
as possible while maintaining standards.
With this in mind, a system has been devised that exploits the experience within
the existing Coach Renewal Panel Scheme to perform the process.
It has become evident that there is conflicting information and understanding of
the process involved; this document is intended to lay out the whole process as
clearly as possible, both for those who make up the Panels that will be
administering the process and for the Coaches undergoing it.
The presumption is that the majority of our Coaches are of such a standard that
the process will be straightforward.

Background

The existing body of Coaches who hold the grade of “Coach” (some 600+
people) have come into coaching via a number of routes over an extended
period of time. The syllabuses under which they have trained have been
changed from time to time, so they have not all been expected to
demonstrate quite the same knowledge. In addition, there are a number of areas
that are in the new Level 2 Coach syllabus that they have never been expected
to formally demonstrate, although the majority will have used the knowledge
and techniques in their day-to-day coaching.
Therefore, an “Update Process” has been designed to allow Coaches to test
their underpinning knowledge of the sport and fill in any gaps that are revealed
together with demonstrating that they follow good practice in their coaching
while meeting (or exceeding) the standard required of a Level 2 Coach.

Updating from Coach to Level 2 Coach
Initiating the process

The Update Process is founded on the current Renewal Scheme. All holders of
the current “Coach” grade will be expected to perform the Process at their next
renewal, starting from the 1st of January 2010. No one will be renewed for a
further three years in the old grade after this date.
Therefore, there should be no one holding the old Coach grade by the 31st of
December 2012 (unless they are following an Action Plan with a specific enddate;
see “Outcomes of the Update Process” below).
It is permitted for Coaches to apply to their Renewal Panel to begin the process
before their renewal is due. However, to prevent the Renewal Panels from being
overloaded, early renewal is at the discretion of the Panel. Additionally, the
Panel can invite some coaches to update early to smooth out peaks and troughs
in the number of Coaches that will be seeking to update, but the individual
Coach must agree to begin the process early
.

The Update Materials

The process is started by obtaining the existing renewal forms. These are
completed as normal. The Coach will also be provided with some additional
documentation:
• An overview of the content of the new Level 2 Coach syllabus.
This is to indicate to the updating Coach the scope and level of the new award.
• A few sections of the Level 2 Coach Candidate Manual
This is to provide the Coach with materials to learn about topics in the Level 2
Coach course that have never been formally included in the old Coach
syllabuses.
One of the sections included is that on the “Plan – Do – Review” process that
should be used when providing a sequence of linked sessions of instruction or
coaching. It is expected that the majority of coaches will already be using this
process, but perhaps only informally, in their coaching. It is a cornerstone of the
new coaching grades and evidence of the use of the process is required to be
submitted to the Renewal Panel to gain the Update to Level 2 Coach.
See below in “Preparing to submit for Update”.

• A self-assessment Questionnaire
This is to assist the Coach in assessing their grasp of the knowledge that
underpins the role of a coach at this level.

• An Update Portfolio Pack

This is a severely cut-down version of the Portfolio completed by those
following the new
course. It provides the Coach with examples of forms that will be required to
submit the additional evidence required by the Renewal Panel to allow them to
assess that the Coach has met the criteria allowing the award of Level 2 Coach.
The Update Portfolio Pack can be obtained from the GNAS Coaching Officer,
Mrs Barbara Barrett, at Lilleshall (Telephone 01952 602791; email
barbara.barrett@archerygb.org) at a
cost of £4 including postage and packing

Preparing to submit for Update

There is no “Conversion Course” as there was at Level 1 Coach.
The Coach will read the overview and the sections provided from the Level 2
Coach Candidate Manual and complete the self-assessment. With an honest
self-assessment, the Coach may identify deficits in their knowledge that they
wish to address before submitting for Update. The method for obtaining such
self-improvement is not fixed; it may include such things as working with more
experienced coaches, attendance at CPD seminars or reading relevant media.
The Coach is required to submit evidence of the use of the “Plan – Do –
Review” process in their coaching. This evidence will be in the form of
documents recording the Planning, Recording and Evaluation of the outcome
for a session performed as part of a series of linked sessions with one
or more archers 1. In addition, “Witness Statements” from the participants in
the session (and also perhaps from more senior coaches observing the session)
will be required. Suitable forms for the 1 A “Linked Session” is a session that
has a pre-planned activity that arose from the review of the outcome of an
earlier session and ends with a review of the session that leads to a plan for a
future session. Thus, the sessions link together into a planned progression that
reacts to the participants needs to move them forward in a coherent manner.
The assessment for Update is of the process of using “Plan – Do – Review” not
the effect that the session has on the archer(s). Therefore the standard of the
archer(s) is not set and it is possible to use a session in the middle of a
beginner’s course if it is to a plan written by the Coach seeking to update.
Level 2
Page 4 v1.2, September-2009 © GNAS
Witness Statements and Session Planning, Recording and Evaluation are
provided, but the Coach may substitute their own equivalent forms if they so
wish as long as they contain at least the information the supplied forms.
CRB Check
Coaches undergoing the Update Process will need to hold a current CRB
Disclosure just as if they were undergoing a normal renewal (that is, a
Disclosure no more than 33 months old).
Beginning the Update Process does not trigger the sending of a CRB Disclosure
Application Form (neither does Renewal); the Coach must request the Form
from the Archery GB Child Protection Officer (CPO) , Mrs Anne Rook, at
Lilleshall (Telephone 01952 602790; email anne.rook@archerygb.org)
The Archery GB CPO has a CRB renewal system in place similar to that for
Coaches and sends out a reminder about 12 weeks prior to the third anniversary
of a Disclosure. That is 33 months from the
previous check. This may not always happen and it is the responsibility of the
Coach to ensure their CRB Disclosure remains current .

Submitting for Update

The Coach will submit the completed standard Renewal forms together with
their “Update Portfolio” to the Renewal Panel at the agreed time. The Update
Portfolio is made up of the the self-assessment Questionnaire and the session
Planning, Recording and Evaluation forms together with Witness Statements.
The provided forms are:
Session plan APFL2/13 (page 39)
Session record and evaluation APFL2/14 (pages 41 & 42)
Witness statements AFPL2/05-08 2 (pages 23, 25, 27 & 29) from the supplied
Level 2 Assessment Portfolio material (or equivalent forms devised by the
Coach).
The remaining forms in the Update Portfolio Pack are provided to give context
to and support the forms required in the Update Portfolio. They may be used,
for example, to plan, record and evaluate 2 These forms may be used as they
stand, striking out the topic at the top of the main box and noting that
the witness may be contacted by the Renewals Panel rather than course staff.
Alternatively, the Coach can substitute their own forms.
Level 2

Other coaching sessions before and after that submitted, but should not be
submitted to the Renewals Panel in the Update Portfolio.
The Panel will process the standard renewal paperwork in the normal way. Note
that the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) point total required will
be reduced in proportion if the Update is
being carried out before the due Renewal date. Referees may be contacted and
the Coach may be interviewed as is normal for a Renewal.
The self-assessment Questionnaire will be inspected. If the Panel feels it
necessary, the Coach may be interviewed, either face-to-face or by telephone, to
check the self-assessment is an accurate picture of the knowledge of the Coach.
3. The purpose is to ensure that the Coach meets the minimum
requirements of the award, not to test the boundaries of the Coach’s knowledge.
To assist the Panel, a set of questions in each of the various areas of knowledge
together with model answers at the
correct level will be provided.
4. During the interview, a proportion of the questions will be asked of
each Coach (not provided to the Coach in advance) and the questions will be
answered verbally not in writing.
The Panel will assess the session planning and review paperwork in conjunction
with the Witness Statements. The witnesses (and other referees) may be
contacted to clarify the statements and paperwork and the Coach interviewed.
The Panel will take particular note of Witness Statements by
coaches who are accredited assessors.
If the Coach requires interview in several of the areas mentioned above, these
should be conducted as part of a single meeting or telephone conversation.
3 Whether by telephone or face-to-face, more than one member of the Panel
should be involved.
4 The Coach does not have to provide the model answer word-for-word and the
Panel may ask supplementary questions to clarify an answer. At a minimum, the
Chair of the Panel will be an accredited assessor at the appropriate level and
will be fully conversant with the process and level required.

Outcomes of the Update Process

The normal Renewal process has four possible outcomes:
1. Renewal of the grade for three years
2. Conditional Renewal for a fixed period with an agreed Action Plan
3. Renewal at a lower grade
4. Retirement from Coaching
The Update process is essentially the same, with the possible outcomes of:
1. Update to the Level 2 Coach grade with Renewal for three years
It is hoped that this will be the outcome in the majority of cases.
The Chair of the Renewals Panel will indicate to the GNAS Coaching Officer
that the Coach has successfully updated to Level 2 Coach by returning the
normal form clearly marked “Updated to Level 2 Coach and Renewed for three
years”.
The GNAS Coaching Officer will amend the Coach’s Membership records
appropriately.
2. An Action Plan
If one or more of the following situations arises:
• The Coach’s knowledge as shown by the self-assessment and subsequent
interview falls short of that expected of the grade
• The evidence of practical application of “Plan – Do – Review” is not
sufficient for the grade
• The Coach’s work record in the period before the Update is insufficient for the
grade
• The Coach’s CPD record in the period before the Update is insufficient for the
grade
Level 2
© GNAS v1.2, September-2009 Page 7
Then an individual Action Plan will be drawn up and agreed between the Coach
and the Panel to address all the shortfalls. A suitable Mentor will be identified
to assist the Coach meet the
requirements of the Action Plan although this may have to be done after the
interview – the Mentor must agree to perform the role.
The Action Plan must have an agreed end-date. This must allow sufficient time
for the Coach to fulfil the Plan but not be an excessively long period. If the enddate
of the Action Plan is beyond the normal renewal date for the Coach, the
Coach will be conditionally renewed at the
grade of “Coach” to a suitable date to allow the Action Plan to be completed
and the Panel to consider the outcome. This is the only way a coach can still be
at the grade of Coach beyond the 31st of December 2012.
3. Renewal at a lower grade (that is, Level 1 Coach)
If the Coach does not wish or is not able to achieve the requirements for
updating to Level 2 Coach, they may renew as a Level 1 Coach if they meet the
requirements for that grade.
4. Retirement from Coaching
This is hoped to be a very rare outcome! You must fill in renewal form and
mark retired.

Appeals

The normal Appeals procedure for Renewal applies to the Update Process.

Updating of Coach Educator Roles (Tutor, Assessor, Course
Administrator, Mentor or Moderator etc.)
Updating a coach from the Coach grade to the Level 2 Coach grade does not
automatically update any Coach Educator roles for which they are trained. To
perform these roles on a Level 2 Coach course, the coach is required to undergo
the specific “Level 2 Coach Course Awareness” training. This is provided by a
member of the GNAS National Source Group or the already Level 2 Coach
Course Awareness trained Lead Tutor or Moderator of the course on which the
Coach is being asked to work.
It is not to be offered on a speculative basis; Level 2 Coach Course Awareness
training should only be provided when it is about to be used.
Staff at the grade of Coach should normally update to Level 2 Coach before
being involved in the provision of a Level 2 Coach Course.
Summary
With the method outlined in this paper, it is believed that all 600+ existing
holders of the Coach
grade can be updated to the new qualification in an inexpensive and relatively
undemanding way
while ensuring standards are maintained. With a little extra preparation, part
theoretical and part
practical but routine, for a renewal process that will have to be performed at
some point anyway and a little extra paperwork for the Renewal Panels to
consider, all our existing Coaches should have been updated within the next
three years.
It has been pointed out if a Coach is doing his job properly he or she should
have no problem with updating.
